Our agile response to approaching PFAS bans

A proposed EU-wide ban on Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) continues to gain momentum. These PFAS – often referred to as ‘forever chemicals’ in ESG reports – are used extensively to protect critical components deployed in harsh environmental conditions. If adopted, the ban will create significant upheaval to manufacturing processes, supply chains and project delivery.

First submitted by Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark and Norway to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) in January 2023 to restrict PFAS under the REACH chemicals legislation, this suggested ban will stop the production, use and placing on the market of approximately 10,000 substances used across critical-industry applications. What’s more, a global trend for implementing similar legislation is gathering pace in other regions including the UK, US, China, Canada and beyond.

In a positive update, the LoneStar Group is already adapting to this changing context, enabling our global customers to pre-empt and successfully navigate legislative turmoil in advance.

Staying ahead of global disruption
As a market-leading coating applicator, the LoneStar Group has a proven track record of delivering corrosion-resistant components that ensure asset integrity within the world’s most extreme conditions. Because of this, we’re committed to anticipating regulatory changes to ensure we retain our excellent reputation for compliance, safety, product quality and sustainability. We do this by constantly monitoring market conditions, analysing regulations, staying abreast of the latest technological innovations and updating our customers on compliant future-focused strategies.

Our world protects your coated critical component supply chain

The LoneStar Group has already responded to this latest PFAS update by adjusting our processes and practices globally.
Despite being in the ‘mid-term’ of this transition – which can take up to three years from proposal submission to ban implementation – we’re already working in conjunction with leading coating manufacturers to develop new techniques and trial next-generation, high-performance PFAS compliant systems.

One such breakthrough technology being adopted by the LoneStar Group is PPG’s Xylan 2.0 coating systems. PFAS free and formulated using proprietary low-friction technology, the Xylan 2.0 range is corrosion, chemical and abrasion resistant. This safe and sustainable innovation is already being deployed in automotive, energy, as well as oil and gas sectors worldwide.

In addition, our expert teams are also supplying customers with historic supply chain data, allowing them to understand where PFAS are present and what future restrictions may occur to increase understanding and minimise disruption.

Operating at the forefront of industry, together

With our commitment to ongoing awareness, problem-solving, continuous training and proactive collaboration, we’re continuing to ensure every coated, plated, approved and accredited component surpasses our customers’ operational needs. Able to coat and plate any product, whether standard or bespoke, to any size or specification, our world strengthens yours.
